Winter 2011 Taco Truck Tally: Support Your Local Taco Slingers

Some people think that Taco Trucks migrate to the south for the winter. Not true. Just like the rest of us they hunker down, try to stay warm and try to make a living until spring comes along. Most of the Taco Trucks in Columbus do stay open in the wintertime. However, their hours become a bit irregular and some just call it a day before the day begins. Equipment used in some of the trucks does not work well when it is below freezing and just like us – if the employees are freezing, they don’t work too well either.

A few trucks take late December, January, February and early March off. Many reduce evening hours and try to stay open on days when the temperatures are above 32 degrees. In the case of Taqueria Jalisco II, the owners decided to open up at Mad River Mountain (skiing destination) and take the tacos to the people. Los Guachos and Super Torta II have brick and mortar locations to feed you when the outside temperatures bring fear to you.

So, in the meantime, the best way to fight winter and avoid cabin fever is to go out there and eat tacos. This is also a way to ensure that taco truck you loved in the summer returns in the spring by making sure they have enough income to survive in the dark days of winter.

A couple taco truck census missions were conducted after New Year’s Day. A few taco trucks have disappeared and a couple show no signs of recent activity. Two trucks seem to have repositioned to ride out the winter together as dueling taco trucks. Taqueria y Pupuseria Salvadorena and Taqueria La Morena have been open some weekend evenings in the parking lot of a bar which seems to change names every few months at 2400 E Dublin Granville Rd / SR 161.

To support winter taco consumption, help out our friends during a slow business time and to help you fight the cold of winter with hot sauce we are listing some of the trucks you can depend on to be open for non snowmageddon days.

Los Guachos Opens Sit-Down Restaurant

That’s right, perennial TTC favorite Los Guachos just opened a brand spankin’ new bricks & mortar restaurant serving all of the favorites (spit-roasted al pastor, anyone?) from their truck and more. To get the skinny, see our write up on alt.eats.columbus ->here<-.

If you haven’t subscribed to the alt.eats feed, we’d encourage you to do so. There are a couple of other trucks poised to make the leap to full restaurant operation, and alt.eats is where sit-down restaurants will be covered.

New in Newark: The Burrito Bus

The Burrito Bus
1551 West Church Street
(parking lot of the Beverage Source)
Newark
740.975.1292

Open Monday to Friday 11 am to 3 pm

While this is a site about Taco Trucks in Columbus, we do dabble in outside of 270 eats on occasion. Well, OK once, we went to Springfield. Anyway, Newark is close and the report of a Taco Truck in central Ohio got our attention. Since it would probably get your attention too, here is a short report so you can make an informed decision.

The Burrito Bus is a gringo operation serving Mexican themed fare. Hot Mama Burritos ($5) with your choice of chicken, ground beef, carnitas (shredded pork) or Cajun tofu served with rice and beans, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, shredded cheese, sour cream and jalapenos are the mainstay. Other offerings include: tacos de americanos, Nachos Gringos, Papa’s Taco Salad, a burrito bol (a la Chipotle) and Pita de Pollo – a chicken taco using pita bread.

This a newer operation and we salute the rise of mobile food in Newark especially if it is Latin themed. Buenos suerte.

The Fall of Taco Trucks

(Picture above: This trailer was once orange and white with the nombre of Taqueria Mi Pueblita. A new color scheme and with a new owner who knows what the future might bring.)

The summer of 2010 saw a surge of taco trucks in Columbus with the number topping over forty at one point. The fall seems to see several trucks sliding down the slope of success. Some have disappeared, several have changed locations, changed hands or changed hours of operation. Many of our Taco Truck owner/operator/friends have told us business has slowed down a bit this year.

We are working to track down leads on trucks we have heard about but never found or at least never found open. We are also updating our maps and posts for trucks that have moved or closed. We can use your help. If you find a new truck (trailers or carts count) or a moved truck – let us know but please include (when possible) an address or cross street, hours of operation and/or a phone number. Gracias.

This was a grand season for the taco trade. Quicho from Taco Nazo catered for Rick Bayless at the North Market. Juniors Tacos and Taqueria Jalisco both opened second trucks for catering and alternate locations. Taco Trucks appeared in the Short North for Gallery hop (Juniors), The Columbus Sangria Festival (Juniors), Pecha Kucha (Juniors) and several private parties and special events (Taco Nazo and others).

La Vida Taco/Taco Truck Culture continues to grow. This slice of Latino life can be seen and experienced best at Rhodes Parks on the West side. The Latino community gathers here on Sundays for soccer and siestas. There are a mix of food vendors each Sunday including two or three taco trucks. You can get a taste of this experience from Hungry Woolf.

A Day in the Park with a Hungry Woolf

Mobile Food Mania continues to explode in the capital city and Taco Trucks are very much on the speeding train that this trend has become. Taco Truck friendly festivals are in the works (at the Ohio Historical Society October 14th and Food Cart Food Court at Wonderland on October 17th). We also saw the first gringo taco truck open in Columbus – Mojo TaGo via Street Eats

Another event this year was the birth of Columbus Food Adventures. Two of our team (hungrywoolf & taco drew) now offer public and private tours of taco trucks in Columbus. This season tours will run to the end of October and then will start up again in the spring. Their guided tours are great for those intimidated to visit taco trucks by themselves, or for those who want more information about the food and culture.

The Three Amigos of Taco Trucks Columbus are frequently described as frenetically busy. This is very true. We are engaged in writing many food related blogs (collectively – seven), plotting projects and executing events at any given time. However, this site is still our baby and we remain committed to keeping it updated and useful to our readers. Thanks for your continued support.

HonduMex

3868 Sullivant Ave
614.405.1465
Open every day, 10am – 10pm

Weird happenings on the west side: Las Catrachas, until recently our city’s only Honduran truck, moved to a location on Sullivant Ave. across from Otro Rollo, and Hondumex has assumed its original location. What does Hondumex do? Burritos, tacos, and pretty much every Honduran menu item that Las Catrachas carries.

This curious converted RV’s pupusas and baleadas don’t quite live up to the high standards set by Catrachas, but their tajadas de guineo con pollo (a Catrachas specialty) is almost identical… which is to say very good… and, as of our visit, not listed on the menu.

If you crave tajadas or baleadas on a day when Las Catrachas is closed, Hondumex will scratch the itch.
